ZAG While Others zig!

“Two roads diverged in a wood and I – I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference”. Robert Frost

As an entrepreneur for over 15 years, I recognize that truer words have never been said but, while I attribute much of my entrepreneurial success and longevity to subscribing to these wise words from Mr. Frost, as a 21st century guy I’ve written them out a little bit differently. My version goes like this, “I Zag While Others Zig” … and boy have I been taken on a ride!  As my sister Susan puts it, “Hey Rivers Frost – not overly impressed with your poetry skills but your ability to put your philosophy into action, now that’s a different story!” and she’s right – words are great but real success comes from ……. I Went Fishing Yesterday!

I went fishing yesterday ….not your normal type of fishing though.  The type entrepreneurs should do every now and then.

I attended the Halifax Entrepreneurs Expo…that’s where I went fishing.

And it was the type of fishing that was all about just hanging around, at the end of the pier, fishing pole pole out…not really expecting anything.  Just fishing and listening and thinking and hanging out.  No expectations!

People there asked me if I had a booth…nope!  Was I a speaker – nope!  WEas I in town for meetings – Nope!  I told them I was just hanging out fishing….

No expectations…

But here’s what happened…

1.  I met some incredible people

2.  I solved a challenge I was having to help prospective franchisees

3.  I solidify a business relationship/sale

4.  I FINALLY got to meet the famous Mark Black – you should hear his story about Living From the Heart

5.  I re-connected with about 7 friends I have not seen in ages!!

It was an incredible day.  Well worth my time and $$!

I caught alot on that fishing trip!

When’s the last time..you just went fishing for the sake of fishing…nothing more?

Here’s to your success!!

No! No! No! My mother used to say….

Did your mother say that to you when you were a kid?

No you can’t do that!

No, you can’t have that!

No, you can’t go there!

No, don;t touch that!

No, No, No!

Well this isn’t about an issue with Mom’s saying no..or a Dad saying no.  This is about reaction to the word NO as a kid!  What did we hear?

We heard….Not right now!

Try again!

It’s not the right time!

Do it later!

Not Now! Not Now! Not Now!

And we came back, we tried again, we did it anyway!

Why is it then when we get older, as adults, when people tell us NO once…we give up? Why were we smarter as kids, or more courageous as kids or more persistent as kids.  Who says in business No is No!  You do!

What are your thoughts!?
